High Court rules in favour of Uber

The High Court has ruled that the ride-sharing smartphone app Uber does not infringe a law on the use of taximeters to calculate fares.

The case was brought by Transport for London, who wanted legal clarity on Uber’s fare calculation system. The Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association, who represent many of London’s 25,000 taxi drivers, had asked Mr Justice Ouseley to ban its use. Uber argued that its app, which calculates the fare based on GPS technology, was not a traditional meter and was therefore not unlawful.
